Spherefix SP30 vs Leica GS18 I is a comparison between two receivers that both solve the point you cannot stand on, in different ways. The GS18 I carries a camera and measures many points from imagery of a façade or a stockpile; the SP30 fires a laser at one point within 5 m and reads the range. The GS18 I is sold by dealer quote with the controller and Captivate priced separately; the SP30 is $7,995 CAD on this site with the controller and the app in the case. If your work is imaging things nobody walks, the Leica is the better instrument and we say so. If your work is layout, topo and control with the odd shot into a trench, the SP30 does it for a fraction of the money and is the one we carry ourselves.

Camera against laser
Visual positioning is a genuine capability: walk past a building face with the GS18 I, and the corners, the openings and the lines are measured from the images afterwards, without a prism or a ladder. The SP30’s answer is narrower and quicker: aim the laser at the footing under water or the far side of the trench, take one shot, and the coordinate is in the controller before you move. Which matters depends on how often you measure things you cannot reach and how many of them there are at once. Neither receiver replaces a total station for a building corner at 80 m; see base and rover vs total station.
What you give up leaving the GS18 I
- Visual positioning, and the Captivate and Infinity software family around it.
- Leica’s tilt is calibration-free and immune to magnetic disturbance by its datasheet; we have not tested the two side by side.
- Dealer coverage and resale value. Leica’s channel is nationwide and a GS18 holds value. We are one company in North York that travels, and a value brand depreciates.
What you do not give up
- RTK with tilt, to 60° on the pole, with the laser shot and AR stakeout in the controller.
- Corrections over the SP30’s own 4G modem or your own base on 5 W of radio. See RTK corrections cost in Ontario.
- The controller, in the case, no subscription.
- Someone to call. Three months of online training and emergency calls answered 24 hours a day. See hands-on support.
Switching from a GS18
Leica Infinity exports LandXML and DXF, and those are what we build from; see GPS data prep. Site calibration is redone from your control points. A crew that has run Captivate learns the Spherefix app in a day. If you keep a Leica base, the SP30 takes its corrections over NTRIP; tell us the base model and we will confirm before you buy.
See the Spherefix SP30 page for kits and prices, the Leica alternative page for the iCON side, or tell us the work and we will say honestly whether the Leica is the better buy for you.
