Spherefix SP30 vs Trimble R12i

Spherefix SP30 vs Trimble R12i is the comparison a crew makes when the R12i quote arrives and the kit around it doubles the number. Both are survey-grade RTK rovers with inertial tilt compensation. One is sold by dealer quote with the controller and the software priced separately; the other is $7,995 CAD on this site with the controller and the app in the case. The short verdict: if you need the Trimble ecosystem or the resale value, buy the R12i; if you need an RTK rover that takes tilted, laser and AR shots and is on the job this week for the price of a used R12i’s deposit, the SP30 is the one we sell and the one we carry on our own jobs.

Trimble figures from the R12i spec sheet and Trimble Access help as republished by Trimble’s dealers; Spherefix figures from the SP30 datasheet. Published specifications, not a side-by-side test. Where a Trimble cell says “see datasheet”, we found the figure republished in conflicting versions and would rather not print one. Checked November 6, 2026.

Reading the accuracy figures

Both makers publish RTK accuracy as a fixed part plus a ppm term that grows with the distance to the base. At 5 km from your own base the SP30’s published horizontal figure works out to ±13 mm RMS; on a network correction the baseline is whatever the nearest reference station gives you. Neither figure is what you get on a bad day under trees, and neither maker claims it is. The practical differences a crew feels are the tilt range on the pole, the laser shot the SP30 takes where you cannot stand, and what is in the case for the money.

What you give up leaving the R12i

  • Trimble Access and Business Center. One chain from the office to the pole, with a depth of routines no value brand matches.
  • Dealer coverage. Cansel has branches across the country. We are one company in North York that travels.
  • Resale value. A used R12i still lists above US$23,000. A used SP30 will not.
  • Trimble’s inertial tilt is calibration-free and specifically resistant to magnetic interference. The SP30’s tilt is IMU-based too; we have not tested the two side by side and do not claim one is better.

What you do not give up

  • RTK with tilt, to 60° on the pole, and a laser shot into the trench or the live manhole you are not standing in.
  • Your corrections. Can-Net or any NTRIP service over the SP30’s own modem, or your own base over the 5 W radio. See RTK corrections cost in Ontario.
  • The controller. The C500 and the app are in the case, with no subscription to renew.
  • Someone to call. Three months of online training and emergency calls answered 24 hours a day. See hands-on support.

Switching from an R12i

Trimble Business Center exports LandXML and DXF, and those are what we build SP30 stakeout and control files from; see GPS data prep. Site calibration is redone from your control points, which takes a morning. A crew that has run Trimble Access learns the Spherefix app in a day. If you keep a Trimble base, the SP30 takes its corrections over NTRIP.

See the Spherefix SP30 page for kits and prices, the Trimble alternative page for the Earthworks side, or tell us the work and we will say honestly whether the R12i is the better buy for you.
