Trimble Alternative: GNSS and Machine Control

A Trimble alternative is what most crews are really asking for when they type a Trimble model into a search box next to the word “price”. Trimble publishes no prices in Canada; its dealers quote. We publish ours. This page puts the Trimble R12i rover and the Trimble Earthworks excavator system beside the Spherefix SP30 and the XFIX EX30, with the maker’s published figures, our Canadian prices, and a plain account of what you give up when you leave the Trimble ecosystem and what you do not. We sell Spherefix and XFIX, so read it knowing that.

Trimble figures from Trimble’s R12i datasheet and Trimble Access help as republished by its dealers; Spherefix figures from the SP30 datasheet. Published specifications, not a side-by-side test. Checked November 6, 2026.

Both receivers are survey-grade RTK rovers with inertial tilt compensation, and both makers publish centimetre-class RTK accuracy with a ppm term that grows with the baseline. We do not print Trimble’s accuracy table here because its dealers republish it in several versions; read Trimble’s current datasheet and the SP30 specifications side by side and attach the same conditions to both.

What you give up when you leave Trimble

  • The ecosystem. Trimble Business Center, Trimble Access, WorksManager and Connect are one chain from office to cab. Nothing in the value tier matches its depth.
  • Dealer coverage. Cansel and SITECH have branches across the country. We are one company in North York that travels.
  • Resale value. A used R12i still lists above US$23,000. A used SP30 will not.
  • OEM integration. Earthworks comes factory-fitted on some machines. The EX30 is always an aftermarket fit.

What you do not give up

  • RTK with tilt. The SP30 holds a fix with the pole at 60° and takes a laser shot where you cannot stand.
  • Your corrections. The SP30 takes Can-Net or any NTRIP service over its own 4G modem, or your own base over 5 W radio. See what corrections cost in Ontario.
  • 3D guidance in the cab. The EX30 shows cut and fill to the design surface on a sunlight-readable tablet, on any excavator brand.
  • Your drawings. We build the surfaces and linework from your DWG, Civil 3D or PDF plans and test them before install. See machine control data prep.
  • Someone to call. Three months of online training with every kit, and emergency calls answered 24 hours a day. See hands-on support.

Switching from Trimble

Your office work carries over. Trimble Business Center exports LandXML surfaces and alignments and DXF linework, and those are what we build the SP30 stakeout files and the EX30 design surfaces from. Site calibration is redone on the new system from your control points, which takes a morning. Crews who have run Trimble Access learn the Spherefix app in a day; the concepts are the same. If you keep a Trimble base, the SP30 can still take its corrections over NTRIP.

See the Spherefix SP30 and XFIX EX30 pages for kits and prices, or tell us the work and we will say honestly whether a Trimble is the better buy for you.
